Former First Lady launches new book, “The Light We Carry: Overcoming in Uncertain Times”with tell-all tour By Harper Hentgen

Former First Lady Michelle Obama released her new book, The Light We Carry: Overcoming in Uncertain Times, on November 15th. Obama, who also released her bestselling memoir Becoming in 2018, looks to share “practical wisdom and powerful strategies for staying hopeful and balanced in today’s highly uncertain world” in this new book. In addition to the book’s release Obama has embarked on a six-city tour where she sits down with acclaimed hosts like Ellen DeGeneres, Oprah Winfrey, Tracee Ellis Ross, Tyler Perry, and more to discuss the book, her time as First Lady and much more.

The first three tour dates took place in Washington D.C. at the Warner Theater, where Obama sat down with former talk show host Ellen DeGeneres and American Poet Elizabeth Alexander in front of sold-out crowds. In an abundance of many fascinating tidbits from the Former First Lady, Obama shared that she didn’t wear braids during her time in the White House because she knew they would cause negative comments and feared the American people were not ready for it. As she shared with Degeneres,” I was like, ‘they’re just getting adjusted (to the first Black first family). It would be easier. But they’re not ready for it.’ It would have been, ‘remember when she wore braids? Those are terrorist braids. Those are revolutionary braids.’ So let me just keep my hair straight, let’s get healthcare passed.”

Obama also shared updates on daughters Sasha and Malia, who are now 21 and 24 years old and live together in Los Angeles. She recounts a fun anecdote in the book where “Sasha attempted to fix us a couple of weak martinis” and placed them in front of the former president and first lady on a set of new coasters. Obama continued by saying, “as Sasha set down our drinks that night, I thought about all the coasters she and her sister hadn’t bothered to use when they were under our care, all the times I’d tried to get water marks out of various tables,
including at the White House.”

On a more serious note concerning her daughters, Obama sat down with People en Español on the night her book launched, sharing that she is highly protective of her daughters and values their privacy, something she hopes others can do as well. In the interview, Obama noted,” how
much do I tell so that the media understands that my girls are not asking to be in the limelight They are not social media stars. They are not looking to be followed by the paparazzi just Getty Images for Live Nation because their mom wrote a book. … And I hope the media hears me when I am saying this: They are not seeking the light in this regard.”

The book contains many more candid stories and insights into the lives of the Obamas, including her early life in Chicago and how they spent their time during the pandemic. It also seeks to offer wisdom and advice on staying positive and motivated in uncertain times. The tour continues in five more cities starting tonight, November 18th, in Philadelphia, PA, with host Gayle King. The tour will also visit Atlanta, Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles before wrapping up on December 13th.
